The title says all.A lot, actually. Go play it,dummy!
(Read below after finishing the island)
Yeah,I beat the island (Number 286!) when it came. I finished it in roughly 45 minutes. The story is short and dumbed down, the characters are blander than their comic counterparts are (I mean, seriously:the main trio get little to none screentime;even Octavian was boring somehow!) though the design and music were wonderful (though I felt many areas were pretty useless, like the Dodo area, which was there just to provide a challenge to get the lens,or the camp, which was also pretty bland).
It wasn’t the ‘Super Easy Mode’ monstrosity that was Galactic Hot Dogs (seriously, after you got the medal, you instantly got removed from the island! At least this wasn’t so linear),but it’s still down there. In fact, the only reason that I finished it late was time zone problems (and the fact that I realized that I hadn’t taken a shower in 3 days). There are a few leaps of logic as well, like the goblet fish (seriously?),which took me way too little time to figure out;or the fact you can’t just jump into the trash chute after you reroute the river (it took me one relog to figure out I had to chop down the tree with the
utility battle-axe) even though you’re very close to it.
I also have a minor gripe with the map, which,by the way,is what the map feature in normal islands should’ve been. Your character walks in the paths on the map in red dots, reminiscent of games like Monkey Island. I hated waiting for Sticky Clown to get from the waterfall to the camp. Of course, that’s just minor. The major one is that there isn’t a bonus quest yet, even though it’s a ‘full’ island. Galactic ‘Wieners’ Island also suffered from this. IMO,it should be trying to catch Octavian and handing him to the Vikings. Also,it may just be a coincidence, but since I went to the island directly from Realms,I arrived there in my Master Builder costume.
Also that balancing minigame.Screw that game. It’s one of the most frustrating minigames that I’ve ever played. It’s no gun shooting minigame from Wild West or a piano timing puzzle from Great Pumpkin, but it’s still bad. I hate that game with a fiery, burning, passion.
-Me when I got caught- AGAIN
So,yeah,it has its flaws, but it’s an improvement from the last island, which,to date, remains the only island I did not have to use a walkthrough AT ALL. The characters are shallow and get no screentime, and there are many leaps of logic, but, hey,I definitely enjoyed figuring everything out (the Viking Castle part was mostly pretty good as well as moderately hard and the final part with dodging everything on the river was good-at least until the candy bar puzzle-which was both easy to figure out (as it was the only thing in your inventory that hadn’t been used yet) and made no sense whatsoever (since when did dodos eat candy bars? I mean, they are starving, but still…)),and the location, design and music were great -the ambiance wasn’t lacking. Kudos to you,Jeff Heim. Kudos to you.
Overall,I give this island 3 out of 5 stars.
Hm…that was fun! Maybe I should do this more often!
…nah,that would be dumb.
